The Southern Lights — the Southern Hemisphere's mirror twin of the aurora borealis.
In plain language
The same solar particles that light up the Arctic sky also light up a matching ring around the south magnetic pole, at the same time. It is less famous only because its ring sits mostly over ocean and Antarctica.
The science
Auroral emission occurs simultaneously in conjugate ovals because precipitating particles travel along the same geomagnetic field lines, which intersect both hemispheres. Satellite imaging shows near-mirror displays with minor asymmetries from dipole tilt and IMF orientation.
